Rules for issuing visas and temporary residence permits in the NJSC AMU:
Registration for international students arriving from CIS countries

Foreign citizens staying under a visa-free regime are required to contact the Center for International Cooperation within 2 working days from the date of their first arrival and at each subsequent entry to obtain temporary registration for residence in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the duration of their studies at the University.

To obtain temporary registration for residence on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a foreign student must come to the Center for International Cooperation with a package of the following documents:

- Identity document of a foreign citizen (original passport);

- Copy of the order for admission to the University / certificate of study;

-  IIN attached to the international passport;

- Information about registered rights (encumbrances) on real estate;

- Notarized consent of the owner of the residential premises for registration and residence;

- Residential lease agreement.

A foreign student living in a University dormitory provides the following documents to obtain temporary registration for residence on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan:

- Identity document of a foreign citizen (original passport);

- Copy of the order for admission to the University / certificate of study;

- IIN attached to the international passport.

Visa for international students

To enter the Republic of Kazakhstan, foreign citizens with a visa regime must apply to the Center for International Cooperation to receive a visa invitation from the University. The responsible officer of the University issues a Visa invitation through the Migration Police Department of the Department of Internal Affairs for Astana by submitting the following documents to the Migration Police:

- an application from the University for registration of a foreign citizen for the migration police (Appendix 2);

- a copy of the order on admission to the University;

- receipt of payment of the state fee (1725 tenge + 500 tenge commission);

- a power of attorney for the right to represent interests from the University;

- completed visa support table.

After the Visa support is agreed with the Department of Internal Affairs for Astana, the responsible officer of the University sends a scanned visa invitation to students or their legal representatives to obtain a visa of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the country of residence.

To extend a student visa, a foreign student must come to the Center for International Cooperation 45 working days before the date of expiration of the visa with a package of the following documents:

- an identity document of a foreign citizen (original passport);

- a copy of the order of admission to the University / certificate of study;

- receipt of payment of the state fee for visa extension (if necessary);

- completed visa application form;

- photo 3-4 cm (1 pc).

Ethnic Kazakhs arriving from far abroad additionally provide a certificate from the Embassy on nationality when applying for a visa for the first time.

Study Visa

Step 1: Clarify all necessary steps, requirements, costs and timelines

    The processing time for your visa documents will depend on a number of factors, including your country of residence. Consult your nearest Kazakhstan consulate for more detailed information on the visa application process. Also, be in touch with Admission Office throughout the entire application process to coordinate your arrival in Kazakhstan.

Step 2: Receive an invitation letter

    Before students can apply for a visa, an employee of the Center for International Cooperation must receive a letter of invitation from the Migration Service of Astana. This may take up to 14 business days, so students must submit all required documents to the Admissions Office at least one month before the start of the semester.

An employee of the center reviews the student’s documents and then transfers them to the migration service of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana. As soon as the Migration Service issues an invitation letter, the responsible employee sends the scanned document to the admissions office for transmission to the student and the further process of applying for a visa.

NOTE: Students are responsible for the costs associated with issuing a visa invitation. The state fee for issuing an invitation in 2023 is 0.5 MCI or 1725 tenge + bank commission 500 tenge.

To receive a letter of invitation, the candidate must provide the following documents to the Admissions Office:

- Scanned copy of the main page of the passport

- If the applicant permanently resides outside the country of his citizenship and plans to apply for a visa from there, then the required documents: a scanned copy of the document confirming long-term stay (for example, residence permit / work permit, long-term visit with official translation into Kazakh or Russian languages).

- University Acceptance Letter: Once you receive the letter, make sure that all your personal details are correct and match the information in your passport. Contact the admissions office immediately if anything is incorrect.

Step 3: Apply for a Visa

Once a student receives an invitation letter from the admissions office to apply for a visa, he must follow the instructions provided on the official websites of the Embassy/Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in his country.

Typically the following documents are required:

  • A copy of the invitation letter;

  • Visa application form (from the consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the student’s country of citizenship or country of permanent residence)

  • Acceptance letter from the university: Once you receive the invitation letter, make sure that all your personal details are correct and match the information in your passport. Contact the responsible employee immediately if anything is indicated incorrectly.

  • Passport (original + two copies; must be valid for at least six months beyond the expiration date of the requested visa and must contain at least two blank pages for the visa stamp)

  • Copy of ticket booking to Kazakhstan

  • One photo (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm)

  • Payment of the visa fee (the cost of the visa fee depends on the country)

Visa for employment

Work visa, work visa – a category C visa is issued:

A category C-3 work visa:

Recipients are persons traveling to the Republic of Kazakhstan, or staying in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the purpose of carrying out work, as well as their family members.

A single-entry visa of category C-3 is issued for up to 90 days

A multiple–entry visa of category C-3 is issued for up to 3 years or for the duration of a work permit.

For what purposes of the trip is a B2 visa issued?

The visa is issued for the following purposes:

For how long is a B2 visa issued and how long can you stay in Kazakhstan under it?

  • A single-entry visa is issued for up to 90 days with the right to stay up to 30 days.

  • A multiple-entry visa is issued for up to 180 days with the right to stay for up to 90 days.

If you have entered Kazakhstan on a multiple-entry visa, you can stay in the country continuously for up to 90 days during a 180-day period. Or, if necessary, enter the Republic of Kazakhstan for shorter periods during the validity period of the visa.

The total period of stay of a foreigner for business purposes in Kazakhstan should not exceed 120 calendar days per year*. Over this period, we recommend obtaining a work permit and a C3 work visa. According to the rules, you can change the category of a B2 visa to a working one without leaving Kazakhstan.

What is required to apply for a B2 visa?

To apply for a B2 business visa, the inviting part must contact the migration service. The main document when applying for a multiple-entry visa is a contract for the performance of works / services.

Such an agreement should be concluded between the inviting part in Kazakhstan and a foreign company sending foreign specialists to the project in Kazakhstan.

A contract is not required when applying for a B2 visa to citizens of 48 economically developed and politically stable states.

How long does it take to get a B2 visa?

Consideration and approval of a visa invitation in the migration service takes an average of 5-7 working days. An additional 5 working days are required to insert a visa at the Consulate of Kazakhstan in the country of residence of the foreigner.

Where can I get a B2 visa?

You can get a business visa at the Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in your country of citizenship. In the absence of a consulate, a B2 visa can be obtained upon arrival at the airport.

Extension of the study visa

To extend a study visa, a foreign student must come to the Center for International Cooperation 45 working days before the expiration date of the visa with a package of the following documents:

- identification document of a foreign citizen (original passport);

- copy of the order for admission to the University / certificate of study;

- receipt of payment of the state fee for visa extension (if necessary);

- completed visa application form;

- photo 3-4 cm (1 piece).

*Ethnic Kazakhs arriving from foreign countries additionally provide a certificate from the Embassy about their nationality when they first apply for a visa.
