On March 6, the world observes World Glaucoma Day, raising awareness about one of the most insidious eye diseases that can lead to irreversible blindness.
Glaucoma is a chronic progressive disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure, optic nerve damage, and gradual vision loss. According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is among the leading causes of blindness worldwide. It is especially important to note that the disease can remain asymptomatic for a long time, and lost vision cannot be restored.
In Kazakhstan, as in many other countries, efforts are actively being made to detect glaucoma at an early stage. Astana Medical University urges citizens to undergo regular ophthalmological examinations, particularly those over the age of 40, as the risk of developing the disease increases significantly with age.
We remind you: only timely medical check-ups and regular eye examinations can help preserve vision for many years. If you have risk factors such as family history, diabetes, or hypertension, it is especially important to monitor your eye health carefully.
