Astana Medical University Students Learn About UN Volunteering Opportunities

Astana Medical University hosted a meeting between students and Nikita Shabayev, Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Program in Kazakhstan. The main topic of the event was international volunteer programs and opportunities for medical students to participate.

Nikita Shabayev provided a detailed overview of the UN Volunteers Program (UNV), the available participation options, and how students can contribute to addressing global challenges. He emphasized that volunteers can work both on-site (in UN offices or abroad) and remotely, performing analytical, translation, research, and other tasks.

A particular emphasis was placed on the fact that participating in UN volunteer activities is not only an opportunity to help society but also a chance to gain valuable international experience.

"Students with a medical background are especially in demand in organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and other institutions involved in healthcare and humanitarian assistance. Another advantage of the program is financial support. UN volunteers receive coverage for accommodation and travel expenses, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance, making participation accessible to young professionals from all over the world" – said Nikita Shabayev.

During the meeting, students showed great interest in the application process, selection criteria, and potential areas of work. Many expressed their willingness to try volunteering and contribute to international initiatives.

It is worth noting that in light of the preparations for the International Year of Volunteers (2026), such meetings are becoming increasingly significant. Kazakhstan continues to strengthen its role in developing the volunteer movement, and students of Astana Medical University are gaining more opportunities to participate in global projects, expand their professional horizons, and make a real impact on society.
