On March 13-14, 2025, the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Interdisciplinary Neurology: Challenges and Solutions" was held in Astana, organized by Astana Medical University. This large-scale event brought together over 300 doctors fr om all regions of Kazakhstan, as well as leading specialists fr om the United Kingdom, Turkey, Tatarstan, and Russia.
The official part of the conference was opened by the Vice Minister of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Timur Muratov, who emphasized the importance of neurological research for medicine and the healthcare system as a whole.
Vitaliy Koikov, Vice-Rector of Astana Medical University, in his speech noted that neurology is a field of medicine that requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach, as diseases of the nervous system often intersect with cardiology, endocrinology, rehabilitation, and other medical fields.
"Modern neurology requires not only deep knowledge but also close interaction between specialists fr om different fields. Conferences like ours provide an opportunity not only to share experience but also to find new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases. I wish all participants productive work, interesting discussions, and, most importantly, successful implementation of the acquired knowledge into clinical practice", said Vitaliy Koikov.
One of the features of the conference was its format. Instead of standard plenary sessions, participants worked in specialized educational schools:
- Pain School, where all types of pain syndromes were discussed, including migraines and chronic pain.
- Autoimmune and Orphan Diseases School, dedicated to complex diagnostic cases and modern treatment methods.
- Vascular and Neurodegenerative Diseases School, covering issues of stroke, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.
- Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders School, wh ere leading experts presented the latest research and therapeutic approaches.
In addition, within the framework of the conference, a discussion club was organized by specialists from Tatarstan. Professors Niyaz Khasanov and Eduard Yakupov from Kazan State Medical University conducted a discussion of complex clinical cases related to distinguishing cardiological and neurological pathologies in patients with headaches and fluctuating blood pressure.
Particular attention was drawn to three practical masterclasses:
"When the obvious cause of stroke is not the primary one: how to find the true underlying factor" – a clinical case analysis by Professor Oleg Vinogradov (Moscow, Russia), wh ere modern methods of stroke diagnosis and prevention were examined.
"Methods of diagnosis and rehabilitation of patients with shoulder dysfunctions: an interdisciplinary consultation" – a masterclass by rehabilitation doctors from Almaty, Igor Kim and Maxim Kim, dedicated to medication-based and non-medication-based approaches to treating back pain.
"Differential diagnosis of autoimmune diseases: MRI imaging" – an interactive session conducted by Professor Erkingul Birdai from Medipol University (Istanbul, Turkey), which analyzed complex diagnostic cases.
An important focus of the conference was the work of the expert panel, wh ere multiple sclerosis was discussed – a rare autoimmune disease that was almost never diagnosed in Kazakhstan 20-25 years ago. Today, about 2,000 patients with this diagnosis are registered in the country. Given the variety of symptoms and the complexity of diagnosis, experts emphasized the importance of early detection and timely treatment of the disease.
At the end of the conference, all participants were awarded certificates. Guests noted the high level of organization, invited speakers, and the rich program of the event, emphasizing that such meetings help doctors stay informed about modern medical trends and find new solutions for complex clinical cases.
