From March 31 to April 1, 2026, the regional workshop titled “Regional Workshop on Professional Status and Training Gaps in Diagnostic Radiology Medical Physics” was held in Vienna, Republic of Austria, within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) scientific programme “Strengthening Medical Physics in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology”.

The event was attended by Moldir Aumalikova, Head of the National Training Centre with a Reference Laboratory for Radiation Safety in Medicine at the Research Institute of Radiobiology and Radiation Protection of the NJSC “Astana Medical University”, representing the Republic of Kazakhstan. She is one of the national counterparts (coordinators) of this project for Kazakhstan.

During the workshop, Moldir Aumalikova delivered a presentation on the role and current status of medical physicists in diagnostic radiology, highlighting issues related to workforce training, professional recognition, and current development aspects of the field in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The project aims to develop medical physics in countries of Europe and Central Asia, with a particular focus on enhancing the professional status of specialists and addressing gaps in education and training systems in diagnostic and interventional radiology.

The workshop brought together representatives from 20 countries, including Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Moldova, North Macedonia, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

Key topics discussed during the event included the development of the medical physics workforce, improvement of educational programmes, implementation of continuing professional development systems, and strengthening the role of medical physicists in ensuring quality and radiation safety in diagnostic radiology.

Kazakhstan’s participation in this event contributes to the exchange of international experience, strengthening of professional networks, and implementation of modern approaches to the training of specialists in medical physics, ultimately aimed at improving the quality and safety of healthcare services for the population.
