When a Habit Becomes an Addiction: Talking Mental Health with Students

The signs of gambling addiction, the risks of modern tobacco products, and the effects of alcohol on mental health were the focus of a conference for first- and second-year students at the College of Service and Tourism.

The event was organised by the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology at Sharmanov National Medical University in partnership with City Polyclinic No. 3 and the City Mental Health Centre. It marked National No Alcohol Day, observed on 25 October.

Department teaching staff Toktar Koishibekov and Assel Kaisarbekova opened the discussion before handing over to future doctors. Medical resident Akniet Kuanyshbai spoke about gambling addiction, while Yerzhan Shermukhambet and Altynai Akhmetkaliyeva, students in Group 417 of the Faculty of Dentistry, discussed modern forms of tobacco dependence and alcohol dependence.

The presentations sparked a discussion, with students asking questions and receiving answers from the speakers. Such open conversations help young people better understand the risks of addiction and take greater care of their health.

At the close of the event, the speakers received letters of appreciation for their contribution to prevention efforts.
