Developing a diagnostic pathway for patients with cystic fibrosis, integrating genetic findings into clinical decisions, and selecting personalised therapy were the core themes of an educational seminar held at Sharmanov National Medical University from 19 to 23 October.

The series of lectures and practical sessions, hosted by the Department of Internal Medicine No. 3, was delivered by visiting professor Elena Lvovna Amelina, a leading researcher at the Cystic Fibrosis Laboratory of the Research Institute of Pulmonology of Russia’s Federal Medical and Biological Agency and an expert of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS). The seminar, “Cystic Fibrosis in the Era of CFTR Modulators: Diagnosis and Personalised Treatment Regimens,” brought together university faculty, residents, interns, and pulmonologists from Astana.

The main emphasis was on applying knowledge in clinical practice. Using clinical cases, participants explored the sequence of diagnostic investigations, learned to interpret genetic reports, and discussed how to justify treatment choices. The sessions covered the manifestations and course of the disease, its complications, and approaches to monitoring patients across different age groups.

Particular attention was given to modern CFTR modulators and personalised treatment. Participants examined how diagnostic findings and individual patient characteristics inform treatment selection and the development of a follow-up plan.

For residents and interns, the sessions provided an opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with clinical decision-making. Practising physicians and faculty members discussed complex cases with the visiting expert and refined approaches they can apply in patient care and the training of future healthcare professionals.
