History of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
In September 2024, in connection with the optimisation of the departments of the Astana Medical University, three departments of the School of Public Health and Management were merged, namely the departments of public health and hygiene, biostatistics and information and communication technologies, public health and epidemiology, as well as the clinical epidemiology course.
The department's staff includes doctors of medical and biological sciences, professors and associate professors, candidates of medical and biological sciences, PhDs, masters, and senior lecturers.
Teaching staff of the department have rich practical experience in teaching in the higher medical school system, who have graduated from basic medical universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan and neighboring countries: NPJSC "Astana Medical University", NPJSC "Karaganda Medical University", "Tashkent Medical Academy", Republic of Uzbekistan.

The teaching staff of the department are members in various professional associations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Union of Independent States and Far Abroad, such as: "National Association of Specialists in the Control of infections related to medical care" (RF), the republican public association "Kazakhstan Association of Health Managers" (RK), the Society of Epidemiologists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, SESAM, etc. communities.
The teaching staff in the training of personnel at the bachelor's degree level, as well as master's and doctoral degrees in the specialized and scientific-pedagogical direction.
Teaching staff is actively working with students, there is a student scientific organization, whose participants have become winners of scientific projects among schoolchildren, students and young scientists in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the UIG, including finalists of startup projects of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
A lot of work is being done with partners, which are universities and research institutes of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the UIG. For more than a year, an interuniversity discussion and student platform has been operating on the basis of the department.
Annually, the teaching staff of the Department prepares scientific projects for participation in grant and program-targeted research on the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as carry out initiative research registered in the GNTE.
The results of scientific research are reflected in scientific publications, obtaining copyright certificates of intellectual property with the involvement of students who are members of the scientific student circle.
Students of bachelor's and master's degrees have repeatedly won prizes, received awards of I and II degrees, and certificates of honor at various International and National conferences and Olympiads.

The main achievements of the department: in a short period, 4 masters of medicine were trained, teaching staff were awarded for their work and participation in the fight against COVID- 19 medals with the insignia "Halyk algysy", "Densalyk Saktau isinin uzdigi", "Kasipodaka sinirgen yenbegi ushin", certificates of honor of the National Academy of Sciences and organizations of the city.
For excellent results in the field of pedagogical, methodological, scientific and educational work, the department was nominated in 2022 as the "Best theoretical department of the NPJSC "Astana Medical University". Among them, the professors of the department were awarded the title of "The best teacher of the MUA" (2022-2023).

Annually, the teaching staff of the department undergo academic mobility of medical universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan and neighboring countries.

The department actively participates in the orientation work of the AMU, participates in master classes for schoolchildren of Astana and North Kazakhstan region, open days, in the actions "Become a student of the AMU for one day", participate in the methodological councils of educational institutions of the city.
On the basis of the department, teaching staff actively participate in conducting certification courses, as well as courses within the framework of non-formal additional education.
The main purpose of the department is to train highly qualified personnel for the Public health Service of the Republic of Kazakhstan to ensure sanitary and epidemiological well-being, environmental safety, and disease prevention.
The department's development strategy is to improve the medical education system based on modern trends in world education, focusing on the training of competitive specialists in the field of public health with a systematic vision of professional activity.
For the training of specialists in the field of public health, there is a good material and technical base of the AMU, as well as the production bases of the city at the level of the territorial bodies of the sanitary and epidemiological service, and medical institutions in Astana.
