History of creation
In 2012, at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Nutrition with a course of sports medicine (headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Prof., Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Dalenov E.D.), the course "Sports Medicine" was created, the curator of which was the professor of the department Slivkina N.V. In 2018, the first admission to residency in the specialty 6R112300 "Sports Medicine" took place. In August 2019, the first admission to residency in the specialty 7R09130 "Physical medicine and rehabilitation" took place. And in September 2019, the Department of Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation and Physical Education was organized, which was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Natalya Vladimirovna Slivkina.

The Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine is one of the largest clinical departments of the NJSC "MUA" ; it trains residents of the specialty "Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation", bachelors in the specialty "Kinesitherapy", "Ergotherapy", retraining and advanced training of doctors in sports medicine, rehabilitation, kinesitherapy and ergotherapy. The department employs 2 doctors of medical sciences, 12 candidates of medical sciences, 2 masters of Medicine, 8 assistant mentors with the highest medical category, 2 with the first category, 1 with the second.

The staff of the department (Zhanaspaeva G.A., Bulekbaeva Sh.A., Slivkina N.V., Ryzhenkova E.I., Khasenova A.Kh., Dzhusupova L.A., Bidatova G.K., Sorokina E.F. ) are involved as experts in the development of regulatory legal acts, clinical protocols, clinical guidelines in the field of rehabilitation and sports medicine.
Research work:
A scientific project was carried out jointly with UNICEF on the implementation of the International Classification of Functioning and Disability in Kazakhstan, a scientific project jointly with UNDP: "Development of the social and vocational rehabilitation system" (2020 – 2022).
A joint project with UNDP "Development of the social and vocational rehabilitation system" (2022 – 2023) was implemented.
The department has a "Scientific School of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation", where residents, students and teachers regularly share the results of their scientific developments and discuss current scientific achievements in the field of rehabilitation and sports medicine. The staff and students of the department constantly take part in scientific and practical conferences of National and International importance. Students of the department regularly become prize-winners of international conferences.
2 master's theses have been defended at the department, 1 PhD doctoral work is being performed. Assistant of the department Labunets A.A. defended his MBA master's thesis.
The main scientific directions of the department are:
Improvement of rehabilitation care for patients with long-term consequences of COVID-19
The medical and social effectiveness of rehabilitation of patients who underwent COVID-19 at the outpatient stage.
The use of an exoskeleton in the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy.
Improvement of rehabilitation services through the introduction of ICF.
Assessment of the health status of athletes.
Improvement of methods for optimization of post-exercise recovery of athletes.
Development of a management system for socio-psychological and medical aspects of the adaptation of CYSS students to the conditions of sports activities.
Health improvement of students of general education, secondary special schools, children and youth sports schools and universities.
Educational work:
2019 - together with doctors of practical medicine and staff of related departments, a seminar was held on "Organization of medical supervision and pedagogical activity of a practice-oriented teacher in physical education and sports".
As part of academic mobility, the head of the department, N.V. Slivkina, in March 2020, at the invitation of the leadership of the National Freestyle Wrestling Team at the AkbulakOlympicCenter, advised athletes on sports nutrition and checked the sports base.

2020 - Bachelor's degree programs in the specialty 6B10114 "Ergotherapy" and 6B10115 "Kinesitherapy" have passed primary accreditation.
According to the results of the rating of educational activities for 2020, the department took the first place among the clinical departments of the university.
2021 - the educational residency program in the specialty 7R01140 "Physical medicine and rehabilitation for adults, children" has successfully passed the initial international accreditation.
In February 2021, the department organized a seminar "Occupational therapist as part of a multidisciplinary team" (MDB) for residents of the specialty "Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation" and teachers, which was conducted by an associate professor of the Department of Psychological and Pedagogical Disciplines of Moscow Pedagogical State University (MPSU and MGPPU) and the head. the laboratory of speech restoration, phonation and swallowing of the Federal Scientific Center of Intensive Care and Rehabilitation in Moscow Shevtsova E.E.
2023 - Bachelor's degree programs in the specialty 6B10114 "Ergotherapy" and 6B10115 "Kinesitherapy" have successfully passed specialized international accreditation.
Implementation of the scientific grant of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Development and implementation of a system for improving the lives of citizens through disease prevention and nutrition optimization depending on the period of life" in conjunction with the Department of Preventive Medicine and Nutrition (2017-2019).
Cooperation with leading international and domestic organizations and clinics: UNICEF, UNDP, Samarkand State Medical University, Schmieder Clinic (Germany), NOC of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Institute of Nutrition Problems of the KAP of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz State Medical Academy named after I.K.Akhunbayev. Communication has been established with scientists from Russia, the USA, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Italy, and Germany.
In May 2024, the department organized a seminar by visiting professor of Samarkand State Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences Mavlyanova Z.F. for students and staff of the Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.
In May 2024 N.V. Slivkina and Burumbayeva held a seminar on occupational therapy for teachers of the Samarkand State Medical University within the framework of academic mobility.
The staff of the department of Slivkina N.V. and Ryzhenkova E.I., on behalf of the RCRP, developed the professional standard "Sports medicine", Slivkina N.V., Burumbaeva R.K., Prikhodko T.B. developed the professional standard "Kinesiotherapy. Ergotherapy".
On May 23-24, 2024, the department held the I International Scientific and practical Conference "Modern trends in rehabilitation, sports and sports medicine".
Prospects for the development of the department:
The prospects for the development of the department are aimed at solving a very urgent problem of protecting the health and working capacity of the population, which is of central importance in the complex of measures for the socio-economic development of the Republic. A comprehensive and systematic modern approach to higher and continuing professional education will make it possible to bring the training and retraining of personnel in the field of rehabilitation services and sports medicine in line with the international standard.
With the introduction of MSHI in 2020 in Kazakhstan, medical rehabilitation has become available to the entire population. The staff of the department actively participated in the preparation of the healthcare system for medical rehabilitation (in the development of NPA, protocols and standards, the development of an automation system, the work of forming tariffs for services). The infrastructure of medical rehabilitation has been formed and the network of rehabilitation centers and departments continues to develop.
Currently, the healthcare system faces a number of tasks: to carry out qualitative changes in the processes of medical and social rehabilitation, fully implement the ICF, review tariffs, protocols and standards, improve information systems, improve the quality of rehabilitation services provided, and staff the rehabilitation service.
In this regard, in the work plan of the department, the key tasks are personnel training, the development of curricula, manuals that meet modern requirements of medical rehabilitation and rehabilitation treatment, ensuring the acquisition of skills and competencies of students and trainees to provide quality services, participation in scientific research and the development of international cooperation.
In order to implement the tasks set, it is planned to continue the active participation of employees of the Department in the work of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan on rehabilitation and restorative treatment.
Since 2021, the implementation of the Roadmap for Comprehensive assistance to children with disabilities, approved by the Prime Minister No. 112-r dated 08/17/2020, has begun.
The experts of the department participated in the development of this Roadmap and the leading staff of the department will also be involved in the implementation of a number of activities.
The ultimate goal of this roadmap is to create a model of interagency cooperation in providing assistance to children with disabilities. Measures are being taken to develop an algorithm for interdepartmental interaction, create a system for selecting technical means of rehabilitation, implement ICF, etc.
As a result of the implementation of the Roadmap, the department is faced with the task of revising curricula in terms of the formation of competencies for interdepartmental interaction, the algorithm of interaction of specialists from different departments in matters of rehabilitation for children. A plan is being developed for cooperation with UNICEF, with the Project Office for the organization of interdepartmental cooperation in providing assistance to children with disabilities.
The department will also continue to train sports doctors and scientific personnel in the field of sports medicine, as well as research work on topical issues of sports medicine.
