The Department of Surgical Diseases No. 1 was originally organized as the Department of Hospital Surgery at the Tselinograd State Medical Institute. It was founded in 1968 on the basis of the surgical department of the 2nd city hospital in the city of Tselinograd.
The organizer and the first head of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor N.F. Khokhlov. At that time, the following courses were based on the department:
- of anesthesiology and resuscitation - head of the candidate of medical sciences, associate professor F.R. Kovalenko;
- traumatology, orthopedics and VPH - head of the candidate of medical sciences, associate professor V.A. Redin;
- Maxillofacial Surgery - Head of the Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor V.S. Cooper;
- Pediatric Surgery - Head of Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Yu.N. Neykov;
- Oncology - Head of the Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor N.A. Volobuev.
Over time, V.A. Redin, V.S. Bondar, Yu.N. Neykov, N.A. Volobuev defended doctoral dissertations.
Since 1970, the department was based at the regional and road hospitals, where there were departments of pure and purulent surgery, oncology, maxillofacial surgery, anesthesiology and resuscitation, traumatology.
In 2005, the department was reorganized into the department of faculty surgery. In 2008 she was re-organized into the Department of Surgical Diseases No. 1.
The department is currently located on the basis of the departments of general surgery (40 beds), purulent surgery (20 beds) and thoracic surgery (20 beds) of the GKP on the PHV City Hospital No. 2 in Astana and the polytrauma department of NIITO MH RK (30 beds).

- 2001-2010 - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor D.I. Shakenov.
- From 2010 to the present - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A.D. Shakenov.

The department has educational and clinical bases:
- GKP on REM City Hospital No. 2, Nur-Sultan.
- Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
- GKP on REM City polyclinic №2.
