History
The Department of Family and Evidence-Based Medicine was established in September 2015 due to health system reforms in Kazakhstan and enhanced role of a family doctors in medical practice. Was first headed by Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.A. Latypova.
Renamed to Department of Family Medicine №2 in September 2019, due to changing in organizational structure of NSC “AMU”.
Since September 2024, headed by Professor A.S. Kerimkulova.
The Department has high-qualified scientific-educational team, who are able to solve relevant problems in preparing first class healthcare specialists and implementation of scientific investigations. Our mentors help to systematically improve education process quality and form necessary professional knowledge and practical skills in students.
Tasks

Strengthen skills in conducting and monitoring medical-diagnostic, preventive, and rehabilitation measures based on evidence-based medicine principles.

Goals
To prepare a general practitioner (family doctor) with the knowledge, practical, and communication skills necessary for successful work in primary health care.
Activities
The department conducts educational, methodological, scientific-research, and clinical-consulting work. Faculty also performs training of interns: 6th year – unit “General Medical Practice-1”, 7th year – unit “General Medical Practice-2”. Since 2016 faculty started residency training in pulmonology; since 2019 training in family medicine.

Medical work includes: outpatient consultations, patient management, expert reviews, seminars, lectures, master classes, and multidisciplinary consultations.
Research directions:
- Diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
- Extracardiac pathology in pregnancy.
- Management of pulmonary diseases.
- Pediatric care at the PHC level.
Achievements
75% of staff hold academic degrees (1 Doctor of Sciences, 5 Candidates of Sciences, 3 PhD). All of the department employees have categories in different medical fields. 11 staff members has the highest medical categories.
Multiple memberships in international and national associations.

Two faculty members were recognized in the national competition "Best University Lecturer" by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan (A.S. Idrisov and A.S. Kerimkulova).
Three faculty members were awarded the honorary badge "Excellence in Healthcare" (A.S. Kerimkulova, A.N. Zhumagalieva, A.A. Mukhamedzhanova).
Several staff members were recipients of the “Bolashak” International Scholarship in 2021: A.S. Kerimkulova, R.G. Nurpeisova, and A.M. Markabayeva.
A. N. Zhumagalieva serves as the National Delegate of the European Respiratory Society from Kazakhstan.
She completed a research internship under the "500 Scientists – Bolashak" program at the University of Birmingham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (UK). Her research, conducted in the Laboratory of Ageing and Inflammation under the supervision of Professor Robert Stockley, focused on: "Markers of disease progression in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency."
B. Faculty members have participated in national and international scientific programs, including:
"TAME" (2015–2018) – Erasmus+ Program. UNDP Project (2016–2017) – Development and implementation of a point-based disability assessment system based on the International Classification of Functioning (ICF). Ministry of Education and Science Project (since 2016) – Development of communication skills. Grant Project (2019–2021) – Methodological support for improving the training system of competitive specialists in corporate governance, management, and leadership. National Scientific and Technical Program – Implementation of personalized and preventive medicine in the Republic of Kazakhstan. International Project "TERAVOLT" (Thoracic cancers international COVID-19 collaboration) – with participation from over 100 countries. Since 2023, the department has been implementing a research project under the “Zhas Galym” competition: "Comprehensive assessment and improvement of outpatient care for patients with arterial hypertension."Over the years, the department has published approximately 250 scientific papers, including more than 25 in journals with impact factor. Faculty members supervise master’s and doctoral dissertations, as well as research projects by 6th- and 7th-year interns and residents in the specialty of General Practice.

The department’s staff actively participate with presentations and publications in international conferences in both near and far abroad, including Russia (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Veliky Novgorod), Italy (Milan), the Netherlands (Maastricht), the Czech Republic (Prague), Spain (Barcelona), Singapore, and at the 12th and 13th International Congresses on Autoimmune Diseases (Athens, Greece), as well as at national forums, including those in which they take part in organizing and conducting the events.
Over the past 5 years, the department’s staff have published five educational and methodological manuals and 1 monograph. An important part of the department’s work is active participation in the development of clinical protocols of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The department’s faculty members supervise the research work of master’s and doctoral students, as well as the scientific research activities of 6th- and 7th-year interns of the General Medicine program.
Scientific research work of students at the department has been conducted since its establishment. The Student Scientific Society (SSS) of the department functions and continues to develop, enhancing the scientific potential and research opportunities of our students. Under the supervision of the department’s faculty, interns, master’s, and doctoral students actively publish the results of their research and present their findings not only at intra-university and national conferences, but also at conferences of medical universities in CIS countries and beyond (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Dushanbe, Vienna, and others)
