A year has passed since our Teacher, scientist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician Yerbolat Derbisalievich Dalenov passed away.

One of the most pressing issues facing humanity today is the preservation and promotion of human health. Special attention should be paid to the issues of disease prevention, including healthy nutrition and lifestyle. Academician Yerbolat Derbisalievich Dalenov pointed out that preventive medicine is the key to a long and healthy life and devoted all his professional activity to the development of this direction of medicine, created his own scientific school, trained a number of scientists and specialists in this field.

More than 700 scientific works have been published in this field, more than 60 doctors and candidates of science have been graduated, 19 patents for inventions have been obtained thanks to the hard work of the Academician of the Academy of Preventive Medicine of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Academician of New York.

"Taking care of your health is today the duty of every person to society," Yerbolat Derbisalievich's words can be considered a great admonition. He made a great contribution to the creation of a National Center for the Formation of a Healthy Lifestyle in Kazakhstan and the implementation of the National program "Formation of a Healthy Lifestyle" and the national project "Healthy Nation." Together with the scientist Tel Leonid Zigmundovich, published textbooks on Biology and Valeology for school education were released. As the first graduate of the Medical University of Astana, Yerbolat Derbisalievich laid the academic foundation for preventive medicine and opened such a department for the first time in Kazakhstan.

Academician Yerbolat Derbisalievich Dalenov headed the branch of the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition, previously based at the Astana Medical University, where, under the leadership of Academician Toregeldi Sharmanov, research and studies were conducted on the problems of assessing the nutritional status and nutritional characteristics of the inhabitants of the northern regions of Kazakhstan.

Thanks to the knowledge gained from his mentor Yerbolat Derbisalievich, many of his students continue to conduct scientific research in the field of preventive medicine and healthy nutrition.

As the saying goes, "The name of a scientist lives forever", and Yerbolat Derbisalievich, who has gone a long way in science, has left many works for the benefit of generations. A year ago, on 5 April 2023, the "Research Institute of Preventive Medicine named after Academician E.D. Dalenov" was opened in the NAO "Astana Medical University", which continues scientific research, comprehensively developing the ideas of the great scientist-educator in the direction of health protection and promotion.

Since its establishment, the Institute has established strong partnerships with leading scientific organisations in the country, such as the Kazakh Agrotechnical University named after С. Seifullin, Nestlé Food Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Research Institute of Balneology and Medical Rehabilitation, Active Longevity Centre, etc., which allows the Institute to gain access to advanced technologies and developments, implement joint research projects, and thus contribute to scientific and technological progress.

The Institute's staff are members of the Codex Alimentarius Group in Kazakhstan and have actively participated in a project aimed at introducing evidence-based approaches to the prevention of chronic diseases in school children through dietary and lifestyle changes. Commissioned by the Astana Education Department, they developed four-week perspective menus of dishes for the catering industry in the city of Astana.

Educational events are systematically organised in Astana's schools, including food laboratory training, to increase interest in science and new food technologies.

The Institute has developed master's degree programmes in Nutriciology and Gerontology, and launched courses in reflexology, manual therapy, hirudotherapy and nutriciology.

In 2023, with the support of the International Association of Kazakhs, the Institute organised and hosted the first national forum on the development of traditional medicine in Kazakhstan, which facilitated the exchange of experience and knowledge in this field.

On the basis of the Health Diagnostic Laboratory of the Research Institute prenosological screening of the health of university students is carried out within the framework of the project "Scientific substantiation of preventive measures aimed at preserving and strengthening the health of students of NJSC "AMU", works are also carried out to study the state of physical development of adolescents referred to special medical groups within the framework of the project "Improvement of medical and organizational measures aimed at increasing the duration of active and healthy life".
