Graduates of Astana Medical University Save Lives at Altitude: Second Case in a Month

On January 24, 2025, an incident occurred on board the Astana-Moscow flight that required emergency medical assistance. However, thanks to the dedication and professionalism of Astana Medical University graduate and otoneurologist at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Karlygash Bakirova, the life of an 85-year-old passenger was saved. This marks the second time in a month that graduates of this university have prevented a tragedy in the air.

During the flight, Viktor Karpin, who was traveling with his grandson, suddenly felt unwell. Flight attendants, noticing the passenger’s deteriorating condition, made an announcement over the intercom calling for medical assistance. Karlygash Bakirova responded immediately.

The passenger had a history of hypertension, but upon examination, the doctor discovered that his blood pressure had critically dropped to 50/30 mmHg, and his pulse was undetectable. The situation required immediate action. Karlygash Bakirova performed resuscitation measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which helped temporarily stabilize the patient’s condition. She also insisted on an emergency landing, and the crew decided to land at the nearest airport in Ufa.

Upon arrival, Viktor Alekseevich was handed over to medical professionals, and his condition later stabilized. Karlygash Bakirova remained in contact with the passenger’s grandson, who confirmed the positive recovery progress and praised the professionalism of the doctors.

Notably, this is the second time in a month that an Astana Medical University graduate has saved a life in an emergency situation on board an aircraft. Earlier, an intern from the same university, Dinmukhamed Bekturganov, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and saved a passenger on the Kyzylorda-Astana flight.
