At Astana Medical University, the student subject-based Olympiad "Secrets of Medical Microbiology" was held among second-year students specializing in Pediatrics. The event was organized by the Department of Microbiology and Virology named after Sh.I. Sarbasova.
The scientific supervision of the Olympiad was carried out by leading specialists of the department: Candidate of Medical Sciences, Professor Asemova G.D., as well as senior lecturers, Masters of Medical Sciences Botbaeva M.T., Sarsenova A.G.-A., Akimbekova E.M., and Duisebekova G.P. The jury included Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Dusmagambetov M.U., Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor Rakhmetova N.B., Candidate of Medical Sciences, Professor Asemova G.D., Master of Medical Sciences, Professor Urekeshev B.S. Additionally, invited experts participated in the jury panel: Dean of the School of Pediatrics, Karibzhanov Aitbek Anuarbekovich, Professor of the Department of Pathophysiology named after V.G. Korpachev, Beglarova Gulshakhar Erkinovna, Professor of the Department of Human Anatomy named after A.B. Aubakirov, Zhanalieva Marina Kubenovna, and Associate Professor of the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Smailova Gulzira Kulybekovna.
In the qualifying round, more than 100 second-year students participated, of whom 35 participants with the highest scores advanced to the main stage and were randomly assigned into 8 teams.
The competition consisted of three stages. The first stage included 30 interactive questions on General Microbiology, covering morphology and physiology of microorganisms, infection, and immunity. The second stage was focused on written assignments, including crosswords and matching tests. The final, third stage presented clinical case studies, where teams provided oral responses. All stages were evaluated by the jury according to pre-established criteria.
The students demonstrated a high level of preparation and profound knowledge in both general and special microbiology. In the Kazakh-speaking group, the winning teams were: 1st place – "INFECTA", 2nd place (shared) – "VITALIS" and "COCCOLILY", 3rd place (shared) – "LIBREX" and "PHOENIX". In the Russian-speaking group, the winners were: 1st place – "AUREUS", 2nd place – "PATHOGENIUS", 3rd place – "LEGIONELLA".
The Department of Microbiology and Virology named after Sh.I. Sarbasova expresses sincere gratitude to the faculty and students of the School of Pediatrics for their active participation and high level of preparation.
