As part of the strategic cooperation between universities in Kazakhstan and Japan, professors Yasutaka Omori and Masahiro Hosoda from Hirosaki University (Japan) visited the Research Institute of Radiobiology and Radiation Protection at Astana Medical University.
The meeting was held within the framework of the international project “Lung Cancer Risk Associated with Radon Exposure: A Reassessment for Populations in High-Radon Areas of Kazakhstan” and the scheduled joint radioecological and epidemiological research plan.
The parties discussed the results of last year’s fieldwork and coordinated the upcoming stages of the project. Special attention was given to methodologies for measuring radon and its decay products in residential and administrative buildings using high-sensitivity detectors.
Presentations were delivered by Professor Yasutaka Omori, chief Researcher Danara Ibraeva, and lead specialist Mulkhat Yelshenbek. They presented preliminary results of radiation monitoring and emphasized the significance of the obtained data for risk assessment and the development of effective public health protection measures.
In the near future, joint radiological and dosimetric studies are planned in settlements located near uranium sites. The parties also agreed to prepare scientific articles for publication in international peer-reviewed journals.
The collaboration between Hirosaki University and Astana Medical University continues to contribute to the advancement of scientific exchange, the strengthening of international relations, and the promotion of initiatives in the field of radiation safety.
