Fr om September 14 to 28, 2025, Sholpan Mukhlis Yertaykyzy, a third-year doctoral student of the educational program 8D05101 – “Biology” at Astana Medical University, completed a scientific internship at New York University Abu Dhabi (UAE) in the Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) under the supervision of Associate Professor Rafael Song (Hirsch index – 26).
The CENTMED Center (Center for Translational Medical Devices) is one of the leading international research hubs that bring together scientists developing innovative technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. The center places special emphasis on the development of regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and the design of next-generation biocompatible materials.
During the internship, Sholpan Mukhlis participated in research at the Microfluidics Laboratory, wh ere she mastered advanced methods for creating cell-engineered constructs based on hydrogels modified with growth factors. The hydrogel developed during the experiment, containing BMP-2 and heparin, demonstrated high efficiency in retaining biomolecules and maintaining the viability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), opening promising prospects for its use in bone tissue regeneration.
“This internship was not just a stage of professional growth for me, but an opportunity to gain advanced international experience, work in a multidisciplinary team, and observe how fundamental science is transformed into practical solutions. I intend to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in Kazakhstan by contributing to the development of cellular engineering and regenerative medicine,” — noted Sholpan Mukhlis, doctoral student of Astana Medical University.
The internship at NYU Abu Dhabi became an important milestone in the doctoral student’s professional development, allowing her not only to master cutting-edge methods of cellular engineering but also to establish partnerships with leading international researchers, opening up new opportunities for scientific collaboration and the implementation of innovative projects in Kazakhstan.
