In Astana, as part of the III International Congress of the Kazakhstan Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons (KaSBariMeT-2026), experts prepared 50 recommendations for the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan aimed at improving the bariatric and metabolic surgery service.
The document is the result of discussions among leading specialists from Kazakhstan, the USA, Europe, Japan, Israel, China, Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries. The recommendations are intended to systematize approaches to caring for patients with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and other metabolic disorders, improve the safety of surgical treatment, and strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation among physicians.
According to congress participants, over the past two to three years the number of bariatric surgeries in Kazakhstan has nearly doubled. At the same time, the need for unified clinical standards and the development of a specialized service has grown.
"Bariatric and metabolic surgery today helps not only to combat obesity, but also to effectively treat diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders. This requires close collaborative work among surgeons, endocrinologists, and physicians of other specialties," noted Oral Ospanov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor at Astana Medical University, and President of the Republican Public Association "SBMSK" (Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons of Kazakhstan).
