She graduated from the Siberian State Medical University (Tomsk, Russia) in 2006 with a degree in Biochemistry. In 2009, she completed her full-time postgraduate studies at the Siberian State Medical University and defended her PhD dissertation ahead of schedule in Pharmacology and Clinical pharmacology.
Since 2009, she has been a Senior Researcher, and from 2010 to 2013, she was the head of the Laboratory of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the Phytochemistry International Scientific and Production Holding (Karaganda).
From 2013 to 2015, she was a Senior Researcher at the Center for Life Sciences at Nazarbayev University (Astana).
From 2015 to 2023, she was the Head of the Laboratory of Toxicology and Pharmacology at the National Center for Biotechnology (Astana).
Since 2018, she has been a Leading Researcher at “Victus Pharm” LLP, where Zarina Shulgau implements grants for commercialization and scientific research.
From 2023 to 2024, she was a Senior Researcher at the National Laboratory Astana at Nazarbayev University.
From 2024 to 2025, she was a specialist in the Department of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Anti-Aging Medicine at the Institute of Innovative and Preventive Medicine (Astana).
Since June 2025, she has been a member of the Board and Vice-Rector for Research at Astana Medical University.
Professor Shulgau is an expert in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacotoxicology, Anti-aging Medicine, and Biopharmaceuticals. She has 20 years of research experience, including laboratory and grant management, participation in international scientific collaborations, the implementation of interdisciplinary projects, and the development of innovative solutions in biomedicine.
Under her leadership, research grants are being implemented in relevant areas: gerontology, pulmonary fibrosis, cellular aging, and the development of plant-based exosome-like nanoparticles.
Awards: She is a Laureate of the Karaganda region Akim’s prize for young scientists in the field of «Medicine and biotechnology», a two-time recipient of the state scientific scholarship for talented young scientists, a Laureate of the K.I. Satpayev Prize for the best scientific research in the field of natural sciences, and a Winner of the 2025 Best Scientist Award in Medicine and Healthcare.
