The Department of Medical Genetics and Molecular Biology was established in 1964. The first heads of the department were associate professor R.P. Gagarina, senior lecturer L.G. Skiteva. In subsequent years, the department was headed by Professor E.P. Miroedova (1979-1997), Professor P.K. Kazimbet (2001-2004), ass. professor B.S. Mambetpaeva (2004-2021), from 2021 to the present, the head of the department is associate Professor N.Z. Altaeva.

To date, the following faculty members work at the department: Head of the department. Altaeva N.Z., Prof. Mambetpaeva B.S., senior teachers Abdrakhmanova B.M., Smanova G.B., Kuzenbayeva A.E., Nurkeshova E.T., Tulepbergenova S.A., Kusmambetova K.A., teacher Kazhiyakhmetova B.B. Innovative educational technologies are successfully implemented at the department in the educational process, thanks to the use of computer technology, multimedia equipment, interactive whiteboards. The department is expanding the list of elective disciplines. The staff of the department is working on the publication of educational literature. Educational and methodological manuals are regularly published (Mambetpaeva B.S., Altaeva N.Z.).

The Department of Medical Genetics and Molecular Biology carries out a lot of work on research programs, for example, work was successfully carried out on the implementation of the scientific research project "New medical technologies to improve the results of treatment of chronic diseases and the consequences of injuries with severe loss of function and severe complications." The staff of the department has successfully mastered cellular and molecular genetic research methods. They have received appropriate certificates and work in various fields in the field of molecular biology and genetics. (Mambetpaeva B.S., Altaeva N.Z. Abdrakhmanova B.M.). Teachers of the department regularly publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, take part in international and national scientific conferences, have patents for scientific inventions, constantly study to improve scientific and pedagogical qualifications. There has been a student scientific circle at the department for many years. Students annually participate in international student scientific and practical conferences, taking prizes. Great attention is paid at the department to the participation of young scientists, students and schoolchildren in the research work of NCJSC "AMU". The department conducts international Olympiads on the subject for students and schoolchildren, as well as a lot of work on the education of young people.
