History of creation

The opening of the Chair of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases took place in October 1967, i.e., almost from the first days of the new academic year. In 2017, the Chair celebrated its golden jubilee. The creation of the Chair of Otorhinolaryngology coincided with the beginning of the study of clinical disciplines by students and took place exactly 3 years after the organization in Tselinograd of a new medical university of our republic. Therefore, the history of the Chair is, as it was, directly connected with the first years of the activity of the Tselinograd State Medical Institute (full history).

Tasks:

• Organization of the educational process at the department, taking into account the wide possibilities of using modern technical means designed for solving both didactic tasks and for diagnostic, therapeutic, and clinical purposes.

• Monitoring the acquisition of universal and professional competencies by students.

• Organization of student and resident work at various specialized clinical departments.

• Development of educational and methodological materials and textbooks for students and teachers.

• Conducting scientific research according to the plans of the University’s research activities, based on grants and various programs and projects.

Objectives and achievements

The staff of the department actively participates in international master classes on contemporary issues in otorhinolaryngology and receives training in surgeries conducted by leading foreign specialists in the field of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery. Over the years, master classes in Astana have been held by professors from Germany (H. Hojman), Italy (R. Pushedo), Poland (K. Nemchik), Egypt (Ali Tawfik), and Russia (Diab Hassan). In 2022, Professor Kazimir Nemchik was elected as an Honorary Professor of the NAO "Medical University of Astana" by the decision of the Academic Council.

One of the ways to implement modern achievements in otorhinolaryngology is through the Republican congresses, international congresses, forums, and scientific-practical conferences organized by the department. Over the past decades, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at NAO "MUA," in collaboration with the Republican Association of Otorhinolaryngologists, has conducted a series of such events. In particular, in Astana, there have been several notable conferences: in October 2024, a scientific-practical conference with international participation dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the first head of the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases, Professor Z.Sh. Shaikhov; in October 2017, a scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the department; and in November 2022, a scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 55th anniversary of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology.

In May 2012, a scientific-practical conference with international participation was held in the city of Taraz in memory of the renowned otolaryngologist of the Republic, Honored Doctor Yu.A. Kuchenyov. In September 2013, an international scientific-practical conference took place in the city of Uralsk, featuring scientists from Germany, Poland, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. In September 2018, the 2nd Congress of ENT Specialists of Kazakhstan, the first Caspian Forum, and a session of the Eurasian Assembly of Otorhinolaryngologists were held in the city of Atyrau. Leading scientists from the Eurasian region, Poland, Germany, and many CIS countries participated in this forum. In September 2022, an International Forum of Otorhinolaryngologists was conducted in the city of Aktau, featuring prominent professors from Germany, Italy, Turkey, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. In October 2023, the third Congress of Otorhinolaryngologists of the Republic of Kazakhstan took place in the city of Turkestan, with the participation of professors from distant foreign countries and Central Asian republics.
