Objectives:
training of highly qualified specialists of paediatric surgeons in demand on the labour market, able to work at a highly professional level, to provide specialised emergency and planned surgical care for children.
Tasks:
- Conducting practical classes provided by the curriculum on the basis of the state mandatory standards of higher education;
- Preparation of scientific research projects and implementation by obtaining grants and other sources of funding;
- Involvement of students in the work on scientific projects;
- Attracting students to participate in scientific forums, scientific and practical Olympiads;
- Practising with students practical skills of diagnostic and therapeutic measures to provide surgical care for children;
- Control, analysis and monitoring of the progress of students, residents, masters, doctoral students;
History of the establishment of the department:
In 1972, an assistant professor course in paediatric surgery was opened under the guidance of G.N.Neikov.
G.N.Neikov graduated from Dnepropetrovsk Medical Institute in 1955. He was sent to Tselinograd Regional Department of Public Health. He worked as a surgeon in Vishnevskaya CDH, later - as a head of the surgical department of the hospital of Tselinograd. In 1970 he defended his thesis on the subject: ‘Acute appendicitis in children’. In 1972, he was elected to the position of head of the associate professor course of paediatric surgery of the Tselinograd State Medical Institute. In 1984 he defended his doctoral thesis on ‘Changes in microcirculation and their correction in purulent-septic surgical diseases in children’.
In 1985 the course of paediatric surgery was transformed and the chair of paediatric surgery was organised on the clinical base of the Children's City Hospital of Tselinograd. The first head of the Department of Children's Surgery was Professor G.N. Neikov. The title of Professor was awarded in 1987. G.N. Neikov's merits are highly appreciated: Honorary Diploma of the Supreme Soviet of the KazSSR; medal ‘For labour valour’; medal ‘For development of virgin lands’; breastplate of the Ministry of Health ‘Excellent Health Care Worker’. He was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
In 2000-2001 the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences B.S.Ormanov. He graduated from Almaty Medical Institute. In 1986 he defended his thesis on the theme: ‘Peritonitis in children’. In 1996 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme: ‘Spaic intestinal obstruction in children’. He started working at the Department of Paediatric Surgery in 1998.
From 2001 to 2012 the activity of the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, A.E. Erekeshov.
A.E. Erekeshov in 1970 graduated from the paediatric faculty of Alma-Ata State Medical Institute. He served in the Armed Forces of the USSR as a military doctor. After demobilisation worked as a paediatric surgeon. In 1986, he defended his thesis on ‘Treatment of supra- and perimuscular fractures of the humerus in children’, in the same year he was awarded the badge ‘Excellent Healthcare Worker of the USSR’. From 1991 to 1995 he worked first as an assistant and then as an associate professor of the department of paediatric surgery of KazNMU named after S.D. Asfendiyarov. From 1995 to 2001 - Head of the course of paediatric surgery at the Almaty State Institute of Pediatric Surgery. Since 1995 he was the chief supernumerary paediatric orthopaedist-traumatologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1999 A.E. Erekeshov was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science, technology and education for the cycle of works in 1974-1998, conducted by a group of scientists, ‘New technologies of diagnostics and treatment in traumatology and orthopaedics of childhood’.
In 2000, he defended his doctoral thesis on ‘Clinical and pathogenetic rationale and development of new methods of treatment of humerus fractures in children’. In 2003 he was awarded the title of professor. He is a member of the International Association of Orthopaedic Traumatologists (SICOT) and the Russian Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the International Association of Physicians.
Professor A.E. Erekeshov was awarded the titles of ‘Excellent Healthcare Worker of the USSR’ and ‘Honoured Inventor of the USSR’. He has a number of awards and letters of thanks from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2006, A.E. Erekeshov was awarded the Presidential State Grant ‘The best teacher of the university’. His name is included in the book ‘National Encyclopedia of Kazakhstan’.
Under the guidance of Professor A.E. Erekeshov, 1 thesis of Doctor of Medical Sciences and 19 theses of Candidate of Medical Sciences were defended.
Under the editorship of A.E. Erekeshov two monographs and 12 teaching aids in Kazakh and Russian languages were published, more than 200 scientific papers on urgent problems of paediatric surgery and traumatology were published, he had 45 certificates of authorship and patents for inventions.
2013-2024 the chair was headed by Dr.M.Sc. V.M. Lozovoy, Member of the Expert Council for Surgical Specialities, Member of the Academic Council of the JSC ‘Astana Medical University’.
Under the direction of Vasily Mikhailovich 1 thesis of Candidate of Medical Sciences, 3 theses of Doctor of Philosophy PhD in speciality ‘Medicine’, 3 Master's theses were defended.
V.M. Lozovoy has a number of awards: ‘For his contribution to Healthacare’ of the MH RK; “Excellent Healthcare Professional” of the MH RK; badge of JSC “AMU” in honour of the 50th anniversary of the university(a); gold medal “Birlik” of the Assembly of the Peoples of Kazakhstan; medal “25th anniversary of the Constitution of Kazakhstan”, “Labor veteran”. According to the results of the rating 2017-2018 Mr ‘Best mentor of the university(s)’.
Main activities
Research work:
The Department of Paediatric Surgery of JSC “AMU” has published scientific, clinical and methodical works (more than 500 scientific papers), which included 5 monographs, 17 educational and methodical manuals. More than 50 patents for inventions and copyrights have been obtained by the staff of the department.
A scientific student circle has been operating since 1980. The management and control of the work of the Council of People's Commissars is carried out by: Candidate of Medical Sciences Kuzmin V.D. Since December 2024, the Journal Club has been operating under the guidance of the assistant of the Department of Tanat Z.Kh. for young scientists. On a quarterly basis, the staff of the department participates in conferences of the Association of Pediatric Surgeons of Astana. Every year, at the All-Russian Scientific Student Conference, members of the scientific circle of the Department of Pediatric Surgery take 1-3 places. Students, residents, undergraduates and doctoral students actively participate in national and international conferences of students and young scientists, and take prizes.In 2019, members of the department took an active part in the 1st Congress of the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Central Asia, 2021 - in the 2nd Congress of the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Central Asia. In 2024 the department organised an international conference ‘Days of Children's Surgery in Kazakhstan’ dedicated to the 60th anniversary of JSC ‘Astana Medical University’.
Clinical activities:
Teachers of the department on clinical bases of the State Clinical Hospital on PCV ‘MCCH № 2’ and Alanda Clinic annually supervise up to 1.5 thousand and consult up to 5 thousand patients, perform more than 400 surgical interventions. Together with the staff of practical health care, on average up to 20 scientific papers are published, about 15 new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies are introduced.
The department organises visiting professors from near and far abroad for lectures and master classes.
Achievements
1 PhD, 13 MD, 3 RhD, 6 MSc theses have been defended.
Residency is 53 %: 1 Doctor of medical sciences, 4 Candidate of medical sciences, 2 PhD, 4 Master's theses.
Three scientific and technical projects are implemented at the Department of Paediatric Surgery: ‘Treatment of hip dysplasia in children’, ‘Applied research of congenital systemic skeletal diseases with growth disorders of cartilage and bone tissue in children’ and ‘New medical technologies in the treatment of chemical burns in children’.
The faculty is constantly improving professional training - in 2019-2024 more than 55 advanced training cycles on pedagogy and clinical orientation, 7 of them in foreign countries.
The staff of the department actively organise and conduct advanced training programmes for doctors of practical healthcare.
