History of the Department's Establishment:
The Department of Internal Diseases for Internship and Residency (now the Department of Internal Diseases with Courses in Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Pulmonology) was established in 2009 (Order No. 253-н/қ/а dated May 12, 2009). The department has been headed by Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences B.A. Aynabekova since 2009. The department's team was formed with the participation of Associate Professor G.T. Sadybekova and Assistant S.V. Trofimova.
Goal:
To establish a foundation of essential, fundamental medical knowledge that shapes the professional competencies of a physician-therapist capable of effectively solving professional tasks. Monitoring the acquisition of universal and professional competencies by undergraduates, interns, and residents.
Objectives:
1. Involving leading qualified specialists from medical organizations in the educational process: delivering lectures, conducting tours, training sessions, and presenting specialties at clinical bases.
2. Assisting instructors in adjusting the content of education in accordance with new technologies applied in medicine and healthcare management.
3. Organizing the work of a therapist intern in various specialized clinical departments.
4. Conducting educational and training activities: skills competitions, scientific and practical conferences, and more.
Main Activities:
The department employs 2 Doctors of Medical Sciences, 16 Candidates of Medical Sciences, and 7 PhD holders. The degree-holding rate at the department is 78.1% for 2023. 89% of the department's staff are employed in the Unified National Health System. The department offers training to 2nd- and 3rd-year students in the discipline of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases, and to 4th-, 6th-, and 7th-year students in the Internal Diseases cycle. The department trained cardiology residents until 2021, and trained therapist residents until 2022. Currently, pulmonology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology residents are being trained, and the training of therapist residents has resumed in 2023. Additionally, the department conducts 9-10 continuing education cycles annually. As of 2024, 14 master's theses and 8 doctoral dissertations have been successfully defended.
The training of undergraduates, interns, and residents is conducted at 8 clinical bases: Multidisciplinary City Hospital No. 3; Central Hospital with a Polyclinic of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics; City Hospital No. 2; City Polyclinic No. 5; City Oncological Dispensary; National Scientific Oncology Center; Defense Hospital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The department staff also engage in clinical and consultative work across all clinical bases.
All department staff use active teaching methods (PBL, TBL, CBL, RBL), and 9 clinical scenarios have been developed and are utilized in the training of interns and residents.
The department also hosts a Student Scientific Society, whose members participate in the annual international scientific conference of young scientists at NpJSC "AMU".
Achievements:
The department team actively participates in scientific research projects:
- During the 2016-2017 period, a research project titled "Improvement and Implementation of the Disability Assessment Rating System Considering the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health" was conducted. Ministry of Health and Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Kazakhstan.
- From 2018 to 2020, a research project titled "Comprehensive Prevention and Reduction of Mortality from Major Cardiovascular Diseases in Primary Health Care Settings Considering Climatic, Meteorological, and Environmental Factors of the Region" was implemented. Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan.
- From 2020 to 2022, a research project titled "Determination of Microbiome and Genomic Biomarkers of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Kazakhstani Population" was conducted.
- From 2021 to 2023, a research project titled "National Program for the Implementation of Personalized and Preventive Medicine in the Republic of Kazakhstan" was carried out.
- From 2022 to 2024, a research project titled "Immunological Profile and Microbiome Markers in Evaluating the Effectiveness of Probiotic Therapy in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients" was conducted.
Collaboration continues with the Scientific Society of Therapists of Moscow, Professor P.A. Vorobyov, Ariel University, Israel, Dr. Ye.Ye. Zueva, and the Human Microbiome and Longevity Laboratory, Center for Life Sciences, National Laboratory Astana, Nazarbayev University, Professor A.R. Kushugulova.
In the 2023-2024 academic year, residents graduating in gastroenterology, endocrinology, and pulmonology underwent final independent certification with average scores of 92.3% in pulmonology, 87.3% in gastroenterology, and 91.3% in endocrinology.
5 papers were published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals indexed in authoritative scientific information databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Springer) in 2023. Among the faculty, 1 employee has a Hirsch index of 5, 1 employee has a Hirsch index of 3, 3 employees have a Hirsch index of 2, and 7 employees have a Hirsch index of 1. For the 2023-2024 academic year, 21 implementations in practical healthcare have been registered, and 4 author certificates have been received.
