History if the Department Establishment
Department of Faculty Surgery and Urology was founded in 1966 by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yuri Aleksandrovich Volokh at Tselinograd State Medical Institute in the former USSR. In 1987 two faculties, General medicine and Pediatrics merged their Departments of Surgical Diseases with professor N.Moon, Doctor of Medical Sciences, as Head of the joined department.
From 1997 till 2008 the Department was chaired by Professor Taigulov, MD, who, in 2008-2010 was Vice Rector and resumed the position of Head the Department for 2010 – 2018.
In 2008 – 2010, the department was headed by Professor O.Tsoi, MD. Scientific research at the Department continued and was supplemented by studying immunopathogenesis and hormonal homeostasis in surgical infections, acute abdominal surgery, and thyroid diseases.
In 2018 – 2021 the Department was chaired by Associate Professor, Dr Saken Kozhakhmetov, PhD,.
Since September 2021, the current Head of the Department is Associate Professor Dr Ardak Omarbekov, PhD.
Goals
Training of highly qualified staff for Подготовка высококвалифицированных кадров для national healthcare and medical science.;
Elaboration and mastering of new technologies and modalities for diagnostics and management of surgical diseases, with relevant scientific research;
Provision of highly qualified and high-tech medical care to the population.
Departments Activity
For 50 years, the Department staff has been providing qualified and, in the last decade, highly specialized surgical care to the population of the city, region and residents of other regions of Kazakhstan through complex highly specialized surgical interventions on the chest and abdomen and, most importantly, sharing their experience with young generation of surgeons. Also, the Department work in collaboration with city hospitals with the most experienced staff leading surgical departments of the city, enabling to utilize their experiences and skills and merge science and practice. Contemporary therapies of surgical diseases were successfully introduced into clinical practice, and innovative methods for abdominal surgery and coloproctology were introduced in the basic surgical department. In addition, the department developed and implemented new educational residency programs in the specialty "Vascular surgery" and "Plastic Surgery".
Tasks
Practical classes as in the Curriculum for clinical disciplines and based in the state standards;
Development of learning materials and textbooks for students and teachers;
Scientific research in line with the University research plan, including scholarship, grants and specific project tasks;
Continuous medical services to patients through highly qualified and high-tech surgical care.
Functions
Implementation of educational programs in accordance with the State obligatory standard of education of Higher Professional and Postgraduate Education in the profile of the department;
Development of work programs for training courses on the profile of the department;
Implementation of a comprehensive educational and methodological and organizational support of the educational process according to the profile of the department;
Implementation of innovative teaching methods: business games, interactive lectures, syncwines (cinquain), etc. in the current year, documented in the form of an implementation act, photo and / or video material;
Elaboration and use of modern educational modalities and forms of education that increase the assimilation of educational material by students;
Implementation of the training of scientific and teaching staff via mastership, residency and doctoral studies;
According to the profile, the implementation of medical work (curation of patients, the implementation of various medical and diagnostic procedures and manipulations, independent performance of operations and assistance in operations within competency of a medical qualification category)

Achievements
The Department staff conduct teaching at a high scientific and teaching level with the wide use of traditional and innovative methods for training and students' knowledge assessment. The determining factor in the Department activity is the unity of educational, medical and scientific approaches. To date, the department has 90% of scientific degree holders: 3 doctors of science (MD), 5 candidates of science, 3 PhD and 2 doctoral students, 1 master student.
