Head of the Department of Urology and Andrology, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor. Urologist, andrologist of the highest category. Graduated from the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy in 2005. Clinical residency at the Oncology Department of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy from 2005-2007. Full-time postgraduate studies in urology at the Department of Urology and Andrology in KazGMA Astana from 2007-2010. Defended his thesis on the topic: “Improving the diagnosis of prostate cancer” under the guidance of Professors Tuleuov A.E. and Khairli G.Z. in 2010. He underwent advanced training at the Blokhin RONC in Moscow, then in Clinical Fellowship in the Urology Department of Seoul National University Hospital in 2016-2017. Advanced training at the European School of Urology and Weill Cornell Masterclass in urology in Salzburg, Austria in 2018. Then in 2018 he was trained in endoscopic enucleation of prostate adenoma at the Urology Clinic of the University Hospital Göttingen. Published more than 40 scientific papers in international and national publishing houses. He has 4 textbooks. Member of the European and American Urological Associations, member of the International Urolithiasis Alliance. Chairman of the Society of Urologists and Andrologists of Astana.

History of creation

The medical university founded the urology course in 1972. The first head of the course was Associate Professor D. Agzamov, who led it from 1972 to 1996.

Professor Yensenbaev E., a Doctor of Medical Sciences, headed the urology course from 1997 to 2005.

In the period from 2005 to 2011, the urology course was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Khairli Gafur.

In 2011, the urology course was transformed into the Department of Urology and Andrology of the National Academy of Sciences "Astana Medical University". The first head of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Khairli Gafur.

From 2011 to 2016, the Department of Urology and Andrology was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Yersayin Zhienbayev.

Today the department is headed by candidate of medical sciences, associate professor Zhanbyrbekuly Ulanbek.

Tasks

- Organization of an effective educational process with the use of modern educational technologies and technical means used for training, diagnosis, and treatment in clinical practice.

- Control over the formation and development in students and residents of universal and professional competencies that meet the requirements of modern healthcare.

- Active involvement of leading specialists of medical organizations in the educational process: lectures, master classes, excursions, presentations of clinical bases and new technologies, and consultative assistance in updating curricula.

- Organization of practical training of students and residents on the basis of specialized clinical departments to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

- Carrying out educational activities: competitions of professional excellence, scientific and practical conferences, trainings, seminars, and other forms of development of professional and personal qualities of students.

- Introduction of innovative teaching methods, including simulation technologies, in the educational process.

- Development of research activities by students and residents in the field of urology and andrology.


Purpose of the department

Formation of basic and fundamental medical knowledge, development of professional competencies necessary for training of urologists and andrologists capable of effectively solving diagnostic, therapeutic, and scientific problems in the conditions of modern medicine.

Achievements

Since the establishment of the course and the Department of Urology and Andrology, the staff has successfully defended two doctoral, five PhD, and ten candidate theses. According to the results of scientific research in the 2024-2025 academic year, more than 20 scientific articles indexed in Scopus and WoS databases were published, 1 educational-methodical manual was issued, and 4 new educational technologies were introduced. The main directions of scientific activity are the problems of urolithiasis, inflammatory diseases of urogenital organs, male infertility, erectile dysfunction (Peyronie's disease), and fundamental research in the fields of urology and andrology.

The department's staff is involved in research on funding aimed at scientific and technical programs for the years 2024-2026, specifically for a project by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan called BR25593457, which focuses on creating a kit to isolate exosomes from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell cultures for therapy and research.

Satisfaction with the quality and effectiveness of teaching according to the questionnaire survey of students is 96%.

Training of students and residents is carried out on 6 clinical bases: City Hospital No. 1, Central Road Hospital, Central Hospital with polyclinic of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Main Military Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan, City Hospital No. 2, Akmola Regional Hospital No. 2, Employees of the department carry out therapeutic and consultative work at all clinical bases.

The department continues to hold monthly meetings of the city society of urologists and andrologists. All teachers use active teaching methods and simulation technologies and are active in publishing.

There is a scientific circle at the department; students and residents are actively engaged in scientific work, participate in scientific-practical conferences, and participate in scientific projects.

The tenure of full-time teachers is 76.9%. The percentage of categorized departments is 92%.

Currently, 27 residents are studying at the department in the specialty “Urology and Andrology, including pediatric,” and 1 master's student is in the specialty “Medicine.”
