From April 24 to April 28, 2023 seminar "Training of mentors in nursing" was held at the Astana Medical University, organized by the Center for Transfer and Innovative Technologies together with the School of Nursing.
The target audience was represented by senior, chief, as well as practitioner nurses of medical organizations in Astana: "Infection Center", "City Perinatal Center", "Medical Center", Center for Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery and Organ Transplantation "National Scientific Oncological Center" LLP, Hospital of the Medical Center of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The lecturers were: Dean of the School of Nursing, Ph.D. Baigozhina Z.A, head of the Center for Practice, Career and Employment, Master Kabdullina G.B., head teacher of the Department of General Medical Practice with a course of evidence-based Medicine, Master of Medical Sciences Bekbergenova Zh.B.
The purpose of the seminar was to train mentors/mentors to ensure the effective implementation of the educational program "Nursing", which will contribute to the formation of professional, practical competencies among students in the process of joint clinical activities.
In accordance with the program, within the framework of seminars and practical classes, students received knowledge of the basics and modern methods of mentoring, international experience of mentoring in nursing, creation of a favorable and safe learning environment, psychological support for students, mentor competencies, the basics of evidence-based nursing, pedagogical approaches and methods used in mentoring, feedback, student evaluation.
During the training, an interactive format for discussing each topic, a control survey, and analysis of situational tasks were used. The discussion of tasks on the topic took place in small groups. During the interactive discussion of topics, feedback and reflection were used.
During the practical classes, using the knowledge gained on the requirements for clinical practice, the content of the educational program, the results of teaching clinical practice programs for courses and semesters, the students independently analyzed the existing clinical practice programs in groups, i.e. they worked in a format close to real conditions. Recommendations based on the results of the work of the groups will be taken into account when reviewing and updating clinical practice programs.
During the learning process, students showed interest in topics, groups actively and enthusiastically participated in discussions of tasks and shared their experiences and observations.
The acquired knowledge, skills and competencies based on the results of the seminar will contribute to the formation of effective mentors/mentors to ensure high-quality practical training of students in nursing in a ratio of 1:3 (3 students per mentor).
Following the results of the seminar, the participants were issued certificates of completion of the seminar for 60 hours.
In the future, the University will consider trained nurses as mentors/mentors for the practical training of students in the educational program "Nursing".
The University will conduct such training on a regular basis, taking into account the planning of increasing the number of students enrolled in the educational program "Nursing" in the following years.
At the end of the training participants expressed gratitude to the lecturers, and also expressed a desire to participate in leadership training in nursing for the heads of nursing services.
